Pre 1996North Maclean was zoned rural residential – industrial use was not compatible in this area
1996Beaudesert shire council changed the zoning of an area at North Maclean to industry on their strategic plan. There was never any community consultation about the suitability of industry in an existing rural residential area.
July 2005 SEQRP released identifying Mt Lindesay North Beaudesert Area (Mt Lindesay North Beaudesert Area) for further investigation
October 2005 Office of Urban Management OUM (State Government) Mt Lindesay North Beaudesert Investigation for South-East Queensland Regional Plan ( SEQRP Amendment 1). North Maclean Enterprise Precinct (industrial area) extended from the Mt Lindesay Highway to the Greenbank interstate railway line.
Jan-March 2006A community group north Beaudesert Shire Action Group NBSAG surveyed almost 1000 people - 89% opposed industry at North Maclean.
North Maclean Enterprise Precinct was added to the South-East Queensland Regional Plan (Amendment 2006).
March 2007Beaudesert Shire Council ordinary meeting moved –
“there is no need or justification for the North Maclean Enterprise Precinct …industrial land can be met in other developments across the shire”
May 2007Beaudesert shire council requested the OUM remove the North Maclean industrial area –
“it is constrained by powerlines, flooding and environmental considerations, plus the need for buffering to nearby rural residential areas …North Maclean is not required…the area should be removed from the SEQRP”
Residents fight for wildlife Industrial estate planned at North Maclean
NORTH Maclean residents are fighting tooth and nail to protect vulnerable native flora and fauna from an industrial development.
The North Maclean Enterprise Precinct sits on a 117 hectare site on the corner of Crowson Lane and the Mt Lindesay Highway. The applicant proposes to clear-fell the whole site including small areas of the federally endan-gered melaleuca irbyana.
Logan and Albert Conservation Association president and Stanley Court resident Anne Page said the site was valuable habitat for wildlife including the endangered spotted-tail quoll, and vulnerable koala.
The proposal is currently seeking approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, with invitations to comment closing on March 9.
Ms Page said the report submitted for assessment was lacking in critical information, including a detailed species survey. "There are other species that are vulnerable in Queensland that won't get a look-in during this consultation," she said.
The North Maclean site was first ear-marked for development by Beaudesert Shire Council in 1996, however by 2007 the council had changed its mind.
Ms Page said the project had changed names several times since and most of the community was unaware that the area was added to the Greater Flagstone Development Area in 2010.
"We really must emphasise the community has never been given the right to say no to this, ever," she said. "No-one's ever asked us, do you want this huge area of industrial development in the middle of a rural residential area?"
Koalas and other wildlife live across the landscape where this extensive road network is being planned. Do you believe our SPP State Planning Policy protects our koalas? It is insufficient. Do we have to provide safe passage for koalas to access their habitat when transected by roads?
We should but we don't. Why not? According to staff of TMR they can not afford to do this. Evidence LACA's efforts on Mt Lindesay Highway to improve safety for wildlife. Were we successful? Not really but there were some concessions and changes made - very grudgingly. Look at Mt Lindesay Highway now as Crowson Lane overpass is being constructed! Look at what is happening beside Wemberley Rd! How much more do we need?
An area criss-crossed by roads - all needing to be upgraded and with extra lanes?
An area where increased human settlement of affordable housing - constructed before adequate wildlife and biodiversity studies are completed by impartial consultants?
An area already being cleared without adequate erosion and sediment controls in place
An area not contained within one connected geographical space
An area where the concept of identified growth areas is include within the UDA Urban Development Area [ renamed in last SEQRP from INVESTIGATION AREAS to identified growth areas - a misleading use of language and terminolgy for those new to the area and SEQRP documents]
