On the 10th December, 2008 the Australian Koala Foundation nominated South East Queensland's koala population as critically endangered. The Federal Government bureaucrats say the form 'was not filled in correctly.'
IF YOU CARE about the future of the koala in South East Queensland - and especially South West Logan, then please phone write and email the key politicians.
With the Queensland state election coming, you can use the links here at the Koala Foundation to generate a letter to the key political decision makers involved to support the nomination.
Although the Southeast Queensland Regional Plan proposes to use new regulatory koala habitat maps to alledgedly protect core koala habitat, this is really not going to factor into what areas are developed in areas such as Logan Village, Jimboomba, Flagstone, Greenbank and North Maclean.
The new Koala State Planning Policy for 2009 will factor in community submissions and sightings - but state government has power to override any planning policy - and it does.
Although new habitat that has to be provided must be protected with covenants, allowing this to happen - relocating a current koala population for human settlement, replacing core koala habitat where authorities have decided that the formerly protected koala habitat areas are needed for development for human settlement eg Coomera Town Centre is signing an extinction certicicate for koalas in SEQ.
State government reqularly amends State Planning Policy to suit its own agenda.
South East Queensland koala population is now less than 4000 koalas. Many of us value being able to share the land we live on with native fauna.
Land stewardship which protects flora and fauna species, farming practices that work with, preserve enhance and maintain native species are policies that need developing. Human settlement patterns that protect all natural ecosystems and restore ecollogical processes that are out of balance are needed - not development as we have been doing for the past half century. There are many fine examples in Australia and overseas to provide a starting point.
